Keeshonds are essentially home or house dogs. Guards of their owners or owners' belongings. Their extremely sensitive hearing makes them invaluable in giving a warning to any unusual sound. These traits were employed when they were widely used on the barges that plied the Rhine. Nowadays due to technical advances, except for a few exceptions, the Dutch Barge Dog has lost this job.
